Both the Oratorical and CCDHH Contest topic for 2017-18 is:

"Where are My Roots of Optimism"


The Optimist International Oratorical Contest is for Students under the age of 18 as of October 1, 2017, who have not yet graduated from high school or the equivalent, and who are educated in the United States, Canada, or the Caribbean. Each applicant is required to give a 4- to 5-minute speech. Winners progress to the next level.

The format for this contest is combined gender. Young men and women will compete in a single contest at each level of the competition.

  • Club prize: Medallion
  • Zone prize:  Certificate
  • District Regional prize: Certificate
  • Regional prize (if held): Certificate
  • District prizes:
    1st Place: Plaque and $2,500 scholarship
    2nd Place: Plaque and $1,500 scholarship
    3rd Place:  Plaque and $1,000 scholarship

To enter the contest, please complete and submit the following application to the District Oratorical Contest Chair who will assign you to a Club Contest near your community.

Deadlines for Events:

  • Club Contests completed by March 30, 2018 - 1st and 2nd Place Winners advance to Regional Contests (Zone or Area).
  • Zone Contests to be completed by April 8, 2018 - Held only if two or more clubs in a Zone hold contests. 2 Winners from each Zone will advance to the Area Contest.
  • Area Contests to be completed by April 15, 2018 -  1 Winner from each Area Contest advances to District Finals.
  • District Finals Contest to be completed at District Quarterly Meeting in April, 2018. - 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Place Winners to awarded scholarships.
